Scott brings 25 years of manufacturing experience and leadership to TDO. As Plant Manager of Albany International in Homer, NY for 7 years Scott was not only able to keep the business viable, but thrive in the face of rapidly escalating raw material costs and stiff competition from overseas markets. Much of the improvements achieved, such as an operating income increase of 375% over 4 years, were the result of a successful Lean implementation and the development of a world class TWI program. The achievements from the TWI implementation were featured as a case study in Bob Wrona and Patrick Graupp’s book Implementing TWI: Creating and Managing a Skills Based Culture, published by Productivity Press in November 2010.
Scott began his career with Mobil Chemical as a project engineer responsible for large capital project installations. He also held positions as a Process Engineer, Maintenance Manager, Plant Superintendent and Plant Manager in his 13 year career with Mobil/Pactiv. Scott moved on to Huhtamaki Consumer Packaging in Fulton, NY and spent 5 years as Operations Manager. During his time there the business experienced significant expansion, successful negotiation of a four year union contract, and the beginning implementation of their Lean systems.
Scott has training in Six Sigma from the University Of Tennessee Knoxville, and earned a bachelor’s from the Rochester Institute of Technology and an MBA from the University of Phoenix.
As Director of the Central New York Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) Center, Bob leads TDO’s initiatives to support the evolving needs of small- to mid-size manufacturers and technology-based entrepreneurs. Bob works collaboratively with academic, corporate, government, and economic development organizations to multiply the many resources in our community to spur business growth.
In his prior role at TDO, Bob led the implementation of HR, Lean, and workforce training initiatives for TDO clients. Bob’s 23 years of experience includes operations leadership positions with PPC, New Process Gear, and Service Merchandise. In these roles, he managed process improvement efforts including project selection and planning, Kaizen events, standard work, cycle time reduction, cellular workflow, and team building. Bob managed several Human Resource development initiatives including staff training, on-boarding, evaluations, HR strategic planning and succession planning.
Bob has a Master of Business Administration and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with dual majors in Business Management and Human Resource Management from Columbia College. He holds professional certifications for Lean Six Sigma Green Belt, Supervisory Leadership, OSHA HAZWOPER, and CPTAE. He is also a TWI Institute Certified trainer.
As a Program Administrator for TDO, Lynne manages the inside operations for the TWI program, TWI Institute staff, and its trainers. She manages the website, program scheduling, training logistics, contracts, vendors, inventory management, documentation and translations.
Prior to joining TDO, Lynne was a Project Manager with Wells Fargo and a Senior Business Analyst and Lease Portfolio Manager with Telmark LLC. Her areas of expertise included training, documentation, project management, information technology and quality control.
Lynne attended SUNY Canton and is trained and proficient in MS Office products, Dreamweaver, and PhotoShop.
Dick began his manufacturing career at Remington Arms Company in Ilion, NY as a machine operator. Since 1982 Dick was employed in various management positions at Remington that included Quality Engineer, Engineering Supervisor, Organization Development Resource, and as the Group Leader of the Continuous Improvement Group.
He left Remington in 1996 to become Vice President and eventually President of Revival Industries in Herkimer, NY where he directed all daily activities as the majority owner until 2007. Dick then looked to put his experience to work as a Lean consultant helping local manufacturers as they struggled to compete in the global market. This work led him to the discovery of the TWI Program and he became a TWI Institute Certified Trainer for JI, JR, and JM in 2008. Dick has since delivered numerous TWI training classes and implementation consulting at companies around the globe for the TWI Institute. His strong engineering and management experiences are now put to good use when introducing TWI to companies and when providing follow-on coaching for the implementation process.
Dick received an AS Engineering Science degree from Mohawk Valley Community College and then continued his education in night school at Syracuse University where he earned a BS Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Business Administration
Sue brings over 30 years of multi-disciplinary experience in Global Marketing, Strategic Planning, Sales Management, Product Development, Continuous Improvement, Team Building, and Event Management to TDO and our client organizations.
At TDO, Sue has driven initiatives to help clients develop and expand international markets, managed an annual manufacturing and technology conference, facilitated strategic planning, produced promotional and educational videos, and developed web sites. She consults with clients on diverse topics in industrial marketing.
Sue's career experiences with General Electric and Inficon spanned diverse industries including semiconductor, electronics, heat treating, instrumentation, optics, and thin films. She successfully marketed products worldwide and has direct experience with sales networks in North America, Europe and the Asia Pacific region.
In various marketing management positions, Sue led strategic initiatives that addressed declining sales, price erosion, quality problems, and increasing competition. In addition, she created financial plans, worldwide pricing strategies, competitive analyses, forecasting systems, and sales and promotional tools. Sue played a critical role in the selection, development and introduction of several new products. She is versed in Stage-gate and lean product development systems. Sue was intimately involved in Quality Management Systems and has extensive training and experience in Team Building, Problem Solving, Facilitation, Conflict Resolution and Organizational Dynamics.
As a principal consultant with the Directions Group she worked with businesses in Central New York on numerous projects including development of marketing plans, business acquisition planning, assessment of business processes, customer satisfaction surveys, creation of marketing and sales tools and the launch of a Continuous Improvement Program.
Sue has a BS in Engineering and Management from Clarkson University and has performed graduate studies in the MBA program at Syracuse University with a concentration in Marketing. She is a graduate of the General Electric Technical Marketing Program (TMP) and is a MEP certified Growth Coach.
With over 30 years of diverse manufacturing experience, Alan is a strong leader recognized for improving manufacturing competitiveness, leading change, and developing staff potential.
Throughout his career in operations and quality management, Alan has delivered innovative and timely solutions to business challenges involving lean six sigma, training & development, quality assurance, continuous improvement, problem solving, food safety and ANSI/ISO/ASQ-9000 standards compliance.
Alan is a seasoned project leader and trainer. He has led Lean Manufacturing initiatives including 5S, Value Stream Mapping, Total Productive Maintenance, Set-Up Reductions, Critical Spare Parts and 1st Piece Inspection projects that have returned significant savings and cycle time reductions. Alan also drove the successful implementation of ISO 9000 registration at two facilities.
Alan’s previous positions include Operations Manager, Director of Quality, and Continuous Improvement Coordinator and for both small and large companies in union and non-union settings. His experience crosses a wide variety of industries including aluminum can making, labels, folding cartons, electronic devices and paperboard container production.
Alan is a Certified Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt and a TWI Institute Certified Trainer for Training Within Industry (TWI) Job Instruction, Job Methods, Job Relations and Job Safety programs. He is a Certified Production Technician (CPT) Instructor for all five CPTAE programs: Safety, Quality Practices & Measurement, Manufacturing Processes & Production, Maintenance Awareness and Green Production. Certifications also include ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100c Lead Auditor.
Alan holds a Masters of Engineering & Quality from Kennedy-Western University and B.S. in Industrial Arts Education from the State University of New York at Oswego. He is a Senior Member of the American Society for Quality (ASQ).
Scott brings over 25 years of experience with manufacturing to his role as a Senior Project Manager for TDO. He combines a strong engineering and management background with extensive practical experience applying Lean Six Sigma (LSS).
His career has encompassed a wide swath of the value stream. As an Applications & Sales Engineer he gained a deep appreciation of the voice of the customer and value delivery. Later he spent more than 21 years with Albany International in various roles including Plant Engineer, Manufacturing Engineering Manager, Global Raw Materials Manager and LSS Black Belt. During that time he gained experience with almost every aspect of manufacturing. This included roles in key initiatives such as ISO 9001 certification, TQA, Lean, TPM, and the implementation of TWI programs. Scott developed a passion for continuous improvement during his 5 years as a full time LSS Black Belt and 3 years as a Global Raw Materials Manager. Working for the world’s largest manufacturer of paper machine clothing, he was able to teach and apply LSS concepts to a supply chain spanning 16 manufacturing plants in 6 countries.
Scott earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Lowell and a Master of Science in Engineering Management from Syracuse University. He is a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt and a TWI Institute certified trainer in TWI Job Methods, Job Relations, Job Instruction and Job Safety.
Clara has thirty years of Accounting experience; fourteen of which are in the non-profit sector. Clara joined CNYTDO in September of 1991 and is responsible for handling all of CNYTDO's finances and reporting. Clara manages our client contracts, tracking & invoicing and monitors CNYTDO's goals, participates in Board Meetings and is responsible for our yearly audit in conjunction with our auditors. Prior to joining TDO Clara spent 10 years raising her family and held many volunteer positions in the School District that her children attended. Clara is still an active community member in her school district and church. Clara is also a Notary Public.
Tim is a certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt with a unique background of continuous improvement combined with corporate finance and accounting. As a Project Manager, Tim guides TDO clients through lean six sigma projects and overall program implementation. His experience in cost accounting, governmental accounting, and financial analytics make him a valuable asset in helping clients with identifying and prioritizing improvement projects as well as calculating the quantifiable business impacts. Tim also helps clients to access and utilize data to make more informed business decisions.
As a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, Tim’s expertise extends from the office to the shop floor; generating significant results in both. He has led office process projects including streamlining an estimating process that increased bid output by 168%, reducing the lead time of accounting tasks by 3 days, and creating a live interactive sales dashboard to enhance an executive team’s effectiveness with data-based decision making. On the factory floor, Tim led lean kaizen events for a small manufacturer resulting in a 40- minute reduction in cycle time and cost savings in excess of $100,000.
Tim’s previous positions include Continuous Improvement & Quality Manager, Financial Analyst, and Accountant.
Tim has a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from Coastal Carolina University and is a Certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt.
Jamie began his manufacturing career at Buckbee Mears Corporation in Cortland, NY in 1996. Buckbee Mears produced TV and monitor aperture masks using a chemical etching process. He became a Process Technician/Supervisor before the company closed due to foreign competition in 2004. His primary responsibilities were to coach and train line personnel to improve their knowledge of all fundamentals of the production line. This included troubleshooting line conditions, defect evaluation and providing suggestions for improvement in quality and efficiency.
After the closing of Buckbee Mears, Jamie was hired at Albany International in Homer, NY in 2004 where he progressed to a Set-Up Operator. In 2007 Jamie was selected to become a TWI JI trainer working with a TWI Institute mentor for six months. He ultimately became the TWI Champion for the company. His key roles were delivering training, developing timetables, tracking training, and developing an audit system to monitor training effectiveness. Jamie not only championed TWI in the local plant; he spread Job Instruction throughout the Albany plants in the Americas where he provided expertise in implementing Job Instruction.
In the fall of 2013 Jamie was hired at the TWI Institute as a TWI Trainer and Program Facilitator. He delivers TWI training and coordinates program deliveries and training material orders for the Institute. Jamie is a certified Trainer in Job Instruction, Job Methods, and Job Relations. He has also completed the 10 hour class for Job Safety.
From 1993 – 1995 Jamie completed two years of Diesel Mechanics and Heavy Equipment schooling at a vocational school, then went on to Diesel Mechanics College at Baran Technical Institute in Windsor, CT.
Marcene S. Sonneborn is a Regional Innovation and SBIR Specialist for the Central New York Technology Development Organization (TDO). The TDO's SBIR/STTR program has supported small companies for over 20 years in a multi-region area to generate over $200 million in R&D awards.
In this capacity, Marcie conducts workshops around New York State for companies interested in federal technology programs including SBIR, Small Business Technology Transfer Research (STTR), NIST Programs, and others. She also provides one-on-one assistance to companies and entrepreneurs to help them to coordinate the proposal preparation process. She reviews proposals for her clients prior to submission, and assists them when they are preparing their SBIR/STTR project budgets. She also uses the NYS Empire State Development network of resources to provide expertise to clients from across New York if capabilities are not available within the client's region.
Marcie also provides technical and business development assistance to TDO clients, principally in the areas of research and development, technology transfer and commercialization, intellectual property protection and licensing agreements, technology-business organizational planning, management team development, and strategic planning and marketing. She coaches clients to make presentations to venture capitalists and to participate in venture capital forums.
Marcie's specialty is marketing and strategic planning for technology-based and emerging growth companies. She has her MBA from the Syracuse University Whitman School of Management and received her degree in the Innovation Management Program, with emphasis in marketing and finance. Marcie is a Professor of Practice in Entrepreneurship at the SU School of Information Studies. She was formerly an adjunct faculty for the Whitman School of Management Entrepreneurship and Emerging Enterprises Program, teaching courses in entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity.
Marcie is a recipient of the Tibbetts Award from the U.S. Small Business Administration. This award is given for economic impact of technological innovation, business achievement and effective collaborations, and effective state and regional impact and support.
Marcie also has published articles on technology management, wrote an assessment workbook for "Taking Your Business Online," and a chapter on the marketing of financial services for a textbook which was published in Eastern Europe. She has participated as the marketing representative on a management team for management training programs in Eastern Europe. She also has worked in marketing research and survey design, including participation on a subcontract to a Fortune 50 company designing and developing technology products for ten plus years into the future.
